Sangaloo river flowing through the main town Shopian is the main source of water to most of the agricultural land of Shopian. It was once a source of fresh drinking water to the entire area but now it has been polluted. It has also been shrunk to a fraction of its original size. 10 years ago breadth of the river was 60 to 70 feet but now it has been shrunk to 20-30 feet. The river is also encroached at many places.

“Once the river was too clean that during the month of Ramdhan (fasting month of Muslims) people used to break their fast with the water of this river”, says Mohammad Shafi, a local resident.
