Forgotten Village of Kupwara

The remote villages of Jammu and Kashmir are deprived of all the basic facilities and Sheikh Mohalla, Kralgund is one among them. This village is only 1 km away from Tehsil Qaziabad, Kupwara. Everybody here faces one problem or the other; water, the absence of electricity, educational institutions, ICDS and health centers. This village lacks every facility that is necessary for mere survival in this contemporary world.

10 households in this community are living in slums. Although the village residents are getting ration through the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department (FCS&CA) but that too is provided under Above Poverty Line (APL) category.

Water supply and electricity are the lifelines of any village and town. Sheikh community has neither. And if we talk about other government schemes like Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana only 2 households have been allotted gas connection.

“We have applied for water scheme, housing assistance, construction of washrooms and other schemes, but we receive nothing from the government”, Fayaz Ahmad, a resident of Kralgund.

Similar is the case of education. Parents do not send their children to school as with the meager income that they earn they could only provide one thing: food or an education. They chose the former.
