Aash: Helping Poor Girls to ‘Tie the Knot’

Written by KashmirUnheard

Last year in October a voluntary group ‘Aash’ run by Qurat-ul-Ain Masoodi organized a mass wedding in Budgam, in which 50 girls were married. The aim was to make the wedding easy for the poor who are of marriageable age but due to low economic stability cannot get married.

The brides were gifted with the holy book of Quran, a pair of golden earrings, seven heavy suits, and a makeup Kit. The girls were also gifted a sewing machine so that they could find a source of income after marriage.

To continue with this initiative, Qurat is now planning another mass wedding this year for the poor girls or girls who have crossed their marriageable age in Srinagar city.

She got the idea of mass marriage when she came to know through a local newspaper that over 10,000 girls in Srinagar alone have crossed the marriageable age.
