Badr-un-Nisa Bhat, a 20 year old girl and a student from Srinagar is an inspiration for all. Badr began making paintings at a very young age, she is influenced by Sufi traditions and teachings and has vast knowledge about it. She not only sketches whirling dervishes but her focus is also on Sufi women who are less talked about in the contemporary Sufi art.
“As a female, competition has different meaning, you cannot travel alone but my parents have supported me a lot until now”, says Badr.
The paintings of Badr have been exhibited across different countries like Turkey and Australia. But due to the lack of proper infrastructure in Kashmir most of the artists in Kashmir face crisis. They rarely make sales in the local market and have to rely on markets outside. That obviously has a dampening effect on the artists’ minds and their artistic output.
“We don’t have single Art gallery in Kashmir and as an Artist it is difficult to survive here”, Badr maintains.
