Yasmeena, mother of four daughters, a 40 year old lady from Keegam Shopian has been a constant victim of domestic violence at the hands of her husband, Mohammad Maqbool Shah. Yasmeena lives with her parents including two of her kids (both girls) from past 7 years. As per Yasmeena, she has been tortured by her in laws, which included her father in law, sister in law and brother in law. Husband of Yasmeena works as an application writer in Tehsil office Keegam Shopian. The reason of violence has been that Yasmeena was economically dependent on her in laws and husband, and would be often refused any such support. Yasmeena has also been forced to do abortion due to having girl child only. Her hands, feet and neck is paralyzed nowadays. It reflects an ugly look of the society. Although a case is filed against the in laws by her, but till now no action has been taken.
“My father-in-law and sister-in-law beat me ruthlessly and when my brother-in-law kicked me I fell from the stairs. I was admitted in hospital for 25 days and was paralyzed. My brothers bore all expenses of the treatment and today I am living with them along with 2 of my daughters. It has been 7 years and since then I have not seen any one of them”, says Yasmeena.
Domestic violence against women has increased in Kashmir despite stringent laws, as scores of women are falling prey to the violence at the hands of in-laws every day. The police figures said that 3960 cases related to violence against women have been registered during last 7 years in Jammu and Kashmir in which 5150 accused were booked.
