Beauty Jan, a 24 year old lady from Batmurran Wanpora Shopian was shot dead during an anti militant crackdown by Indian forces on 19 December 2017. The people agitated against the operation which resulted in stone pelting, forces tried to have control over the situation by firing live bullets on the protesters during which Beauty Jan received a bullet while she was in her parental home. Beauty Jan, has been a victim of constant domestic violence at the hands of her husband, Manzoor Ahmed as per Beauty Jan’s parental family. The husband has been demanding dowry from Beauty after marriage. Beauty has left an 11 month old daughter behind.
“We want a secured life for Azra, Beauty’s daughter. We want justice be provided to us and SRO/ Ex-gratia shall be provided to Azra”, says Mohammad Yaqoob, Beauty Jaan’s brother.
The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) had issued notice to the civil and police administration, Shopian, seeking their report regarding the killing of a woman by government forces “ intentionally” when her suckling child was in her lap at her house in South Kashmir on December 19, 2017.
Chairman State Human Rights Commission, Justice Bilal Nazki has directed Deputy Commissioner and SSP Shopian to appear in person before the Commission. “Despite Notices having been served through E-mail and Fax there is no response from Deputy Commissioner and SSP Shopian. In these circumstances both the officers are directed to appear in person before the commission on next date of hearing falling on 27 April 2018,” the Commission in its letter to these officers read.
