“Our Dreams Were Buried Too”: Women on LOC Grapple with Loss After Devastating Shelling

Written by Sajad Rasool

In Hajinard village of Karnah sector, the aftermath of cross-border shelling in May 2025 between India and Pakistan has left more than just physical destruction — it has shattered lives, hopes, and futures, especially for the women of the community. Among them is a young girl whose wedding was only days away. Now, she stands silently before the ruins of her home, unable to speak — her dreams reduced to dust. Her mother watches helplessly, her eyes filled with silent questions and unspoken grief, pleading for answers in a world that has turned away.

Another woman, whose entire house was leveled in the shelling, shares her anguish. Her husband is a daily-wage laborer, barely able to provide two meals a day. Through her tears, she says, “Years of savings, my wedding jewellery — everything is gone with this house.” She no longer believes that rebuilding is even possible.
