Water Shortage Across Rural Kashmir Grim

Kawni Village in district Pulwama is suffering from the unavailability of water in their fields. Irrigation Pump was supposed to be functional by 2018 but till date, the pump is not functional. 100 households have to make ground to nearby Jehlum river for water, or else they have to go to other villages for water.

In India, most of the villages are facing water scarcity. In a list of 122 countries rated on the quality of potable water, India has been ranked a highly poor 120th for its water quality. The average availability of water in India is shrinking continuously. It is estimated by 2020 India will become a water-stressed nation. Today nearly 50% of the villages don’t have access to safe drinking water.

Kawni village is such an example of a water-stressed nation where village residents face an acute shortage of water. Although the village has water for drinking purpose, they are facing issue in irrigating their agricultural field. They do not have enough source to irrigate their fields. The irrigation pump is under construction and the government is not taking any attention towards this issue.
