Zaitoon Bibi, 37 of Poonch district of J&K became another victim of domestic violence during this lockdown. She was beaten by her husband on the 9th of April and then she was rushed to Jammu hospital were she breathed her last on 11th April. Her husband Shokat Hussain was kept in police custody for some days and was released as according to the police the cause of death is yet to be ascertained as the postmortem report has been delayed due to lockdown. Zaiton was a mother to three sons and one daughter.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that the risk of intimate partner violence is likely to increase during the lockdown. Sadly, this is coming true in many parts of the country. Helpline numbers are of big help in cities. However, in remote mountain villages, it may be too late before a victim can call for help. In Poonch district of Jammu, Zaitoon Bi allegedly succumbed to her husband’s violence. Police officials informed our community correspondent that he has been arrested.
