China and India are the two main producers of silk currently, with more than 60% of the world’s annual production. In Kashmir, many farmers have been rearing silkworms to extract silk as there is an abundance of mulberry trees in the valley, the leaves of which are fed to these worms. Current climatic conditions have led to the dying of silkworms in a Kupwara village leading to losses to these farmers. Pir Azhar reports from Kupwara.
