Negligence of Power Department leads to Death of Mushtaq Ahmad, a Laborer

Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat, son of Abdul Khaliq Bhat, a resident of Goripora Rainawari, tragically died of an electric shock on 5th March 2017 while he was repairing a wire  atop an electric pole in Badshah Chowk, Srinagar when current was switched on suddenly at the sub-station concerned. His companion survived with crippling injuries in the tragedy. Both of them were labourers working for a contractor. The reasons for his death is said to be the official negligence of power department. Witnesses alleged the PDD took a long time to disconnect the circuit and rescue also came late. The deceased is survived by his wife and three children.

On 13th March 2017 Casual laborers working in Power Development Department (PDD) staged a protest in favour of their series of demands that include regularization of services and compensation to the families of their associate killed in the line of duty. They said that only in last two months, six lives were lost and their families are suffering badly due to economic crunch. The casual laborers demanded that their colleagues should be compensated at par with permanent employees in case of deaths or injuries.
