Getting in the Game – Meet Kashmiri Girls Excelling in Sports

Two Girls from Bandipora district of Kashmir, Sabahat Afreen (13 years), Syed Fatiqah Manzoor (12 years) have participated in 13th Princess’s Cup International Taekwondo championship at Bangkok Thailand on March 25-26, 2017. While as, Aabida Akhtar (25 years)and Rabia Riyaz (18 years) have been selected for World Kickboxing Championship which is being held in Argentina in 2018. These four girls are enrolled in Ali’s Sports Academy, Bandipora. They are trained by Master Faisal. “Around 1600 girls from Bandipora are enrolled in this sports academy and day by day number is increasing,” says Master Faisal. This is one of the inspiring stories from Kashmir valley that shows how women are coming in the field.

“People use to comment on us. But I had desire to learn Taekwondo and my parents allowed me to do so. My Mother and brothers support me a lot,” says Adida Akhtar. “My father told me not to give ear what people say and think about us. He made me understand that we should only focus on our work,” added Syed Fatiqah.
