Mystery Shrouds a Junior Engineer, Mudasir’s Alleged Suicide

Mudasir Aziz, a mother of a five year old child allegedly committed suicide on 7th of May 2017. She is reported to have jumped into the river near Zaina Kadal. Police has not found the dead body and no conclusion could be reached. The mystery behind the suicide of Mudasir, who is from Srinagar, keeps getting deeper as both people from her Mother’s home as well as In-laws contradict about the treatment she used to get from her In-laws. Mudasir was a Junior Engineer – an M.Tech topper of her time, posted in the Irrigation Department of state government in Ganderbal.

Over 40 percent of women in Kashmir are physically or mentally abused by the husbands or by the in-laws. As per the official data released in 2015, as many as 2,009 cases have been registered and 4,157 persons have been booked during the past five years under provision of the Domestic Violence Act. The J&K State Commission for Women receives 1600-1700 domestic violence cases every year.

In last 3 years due to dowry and other related cases, 15 women lost their lives in Valley . The official figures reveal that from 2014 to 2016, 312 females were forced to commit suicide and 361 accused have been booked by police across Kashmir Valley.
