Kashmir Unrest: The Horror of Shells – Locals of Budgam Narrate Their Story

Forces broke into a mohalla of Aripanthan village of Budgam on 30th December 2016, after some boys pelted stones on vehicles – Locals allege police and CRPF of breaking into houses and shelling them, due to which property was damaged and inmates were harassed.  Aarifa, a local resident says, “They fired 2 Pava shells, all bedding and room furnishing etc have been burnt. We are left with nothing, among 30-40 bedding we are only left with 2. Now we sleep at neighbour’s house.”

 

At least 264 government and private properties including schools and police establishments were torched and damaged during the five months of unrest in Kashmir triggered by killing of  Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani on July 8 last year. The figures disclosed that 133 private properties suffered extensive damage during the unrest. Of these 80 private properties were set afire while 53 others were damaged.
