Written by KashmirUnheard

Nahida Manzoor created history by becoming the first Kashmiri woman to scale the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest. Nahida scaled the summit on 17 April 2019 along with her Sherpa Guide Mr. Nima Kancha.

Nahida is a resident of Zewan in Srinagar. Her father is a shopkeeper and mother a house-wife. She belongs to the middle-class family and had to face various financial problems to achieve success. Her passion for mountaineering always encouraged her to go for it.

Nahida started climbing mountains from the age of 10. In the year 2017, she took mountaineering professionally and pursued courses in mountaineering, rock climbing and skiing from Nehru Institute of Mountaineering and Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering.

Nahida’s has got full support from her parents in pursuing mountaineering as a profession. However, her dream of becoming a professional mountaineer was full of hurdles. She started an online crowd-funding campaign on social media in March to fulfill her dream as she required Rs 30 lakh for the adventure. She was able to generate sponsorships from TCI Max (a cement factory) J&K State Sports Council, and District Commissioner Srinagar after she started the crowdfunding campaign.
